Dr. Jeffrey L. Miller is the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In this capacity, Dr. Miller serves as the Director of the “Pride of Niner Nation” Marching Band and 49ers Basketball Band, is conductor of the Symphonic Band and teaches courses in marching band and brass techniques. Additionally, Dr. Miller serves as the conductor for the Charlotte Youth Symphonic Band of the Charlotte Youth Wind Ensembles (CYWE).

Prior to his appointment at UNC Charlotte, Dr. Miller served as the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In this position, he served as the Assistant Director of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band and the director of the Buff Basketball Band. Additional responsibilities included conducting the Concert Band, teaching a course in marching band techniques, supervising student teachers and coordinating the CU Summer Music Academy as its Assistant Director. Dr. Miller also served as the Musical Director and Conductor for the Boulder Concert Band, an adult community-based wind band.

He received his Bachelor of Music Education from Florida Southern College and his Master of Music Education and Doctor of Philosophy, with emphasis in instrumental conducting, from Florida State University. At Florida State, Dr. Miller served as a graduate conducting associate for the University Wind and Athletic bands and was assistant conductor of the Tallahassee Winds, a community-based wind band. In addition to conducting, he also instructed instrumental pedagogy courses and was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate and graduate Instrumental Conducting courses.

Prior to his university appointments, Dr. Miller served as a public school instrumental music educator in the state of Florida, teaching middle and senior high bands.

Dr. Miller has conducted honor bands in Mississippi, Florida and North Carolina, and remains active as a clinician/conductor, adjudicator, drill writer and music arranger. Miller’s research interests include evaluating quality in wind band literature for school ensembles, pre-service teacher preparation and focus of attention and aesthetic response to musical elements. He has presented research and teaching clinics at regional, state-level and national conferences, including the CBDNA Athletic Band Symposium, CBDNA Southern Division Conference, and the Florida, Colorado and North Carolina Music Educators Conferences. He holds professional membership in the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (currently serving as the chapter adviser of the Sigma Beta chapter at UNC Charlotte).
